PROJECT: in-depth study of avalanche issues affecting the SP335 provincial road along the Stroppo – Cucchiales section.

OBJECTIVE: The study investigated potential avalanche phenomena with the aim of producing a PISTE (intervention plan for temporary suspension of operations) for winter road management and a series of preliminary intervention proposals to securing of the infrastructure.
DESCRIPTION: On behalf of Provincia di Cuneo, Alpsolut prepared the Intervention Plan for Temporary Suspension of Operations (P.I.S.T.E.) with the aim of analysing and assessing safety and management issues, with reference to avalanche risks, as regard the provincial road SP 335 connecting the hamlets of Stroppo and San Martino, in the Province of Cuneo. The aim was to identify procedures useful for mitigating avalanche risk and to summarize the interventions considered most strategic for securing the road sections affected by avalanche phenomena. The study examined snow and weather monitoring actions as well as the operations for closing and opening the affected areas, in order to enable their operational management. Upstream of the operational assessments, a snow-climate study, avalanche dynamics simulations, and an analysis of historical avalanche activity data were also carried out, aimed at identifying the various criticaly threshold.
