Near-Real-Time Snow and Avalanche Monitoring

Use of satellite data and machine learning algorithms to monitor avalanche activity, snow depth, and the presence of wet snow

PROJECT: Methods for identifying avalanche activity, snow depth on the ground, and the presence of wet snow, have been applied in various climatic contexts, from Norway to Italy.

CLIENT: Public and private Companies

STAKEHOLDERS: Wyssen, Arpa Marche, Comune di Livigno

APPLICATIONS:

  • – Near-real-time monitoring of avalanche activity at different scales (Norway, Livigno, Marche);
  • – Mapping of snow depth on the ground (Norway, Livigno)
  • – Mapping of wet snow (Livigno, Marche, Norway)

DESCRIPTION: Through the use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite data, combined with advanced machine learning algorithms and mathematical models, we are able to monitor the majority of avalanche activity at with weekly resolution and map snow depth on the ground, or the presence of wet snow, at various scales.
