Historical reconstruction of avalanche activity in remote areas

Use of satellite data and machine learning algorithms to monitor and reconstruct avalanche activity

PROJECT: Several studies were carried out to define the reconstruction of avalanche activity in more or less remote areas such as Canada, Norway, Greenland, and Livigno

CLIENT: Construction and Mining Companies, Public Bodies

STAKEHOLDERS: Wyssen, ASIAQ, Comune di Livigno

APPLICATIONS

  • – Management of an access road to a hydroelectric plant (Norway);
  • – Support for the design of access infrastructure to a mine in a remote area (Canada);
  • – Reconstruction of the avalanche regime in the Nuuk area and monitoring of avalanche interference on the electricity grid (Greenland);
  • – Integration of the avalanche-related registry in the municipal area of Livigno (Italy).

DESCRIPTION: Through the use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite data, combined with advanced machine learning algorithms, we are able to reconstruct the majority of the avalanche events that have occurred since 2015 onwards, reconstructing avalanche activity and producing susceptibility maps based on real observations, which are useful for territorial planning of protective measures.
