PROJECT: development of the Avalanche Interference Plan (PIV) for the area on which Rifugio Branca is built

OBJECTIVE: to assess the risks due to extraordinary avalanche events fot the structure and visitors of the Rifugio Branca
DESCRIPTION: At the request of Mr. Alberti Eugenio, manager of Rifugio Branca, an analysis was carried out on the mixed ice/snow avalanche that is triggered by the north-western outflow of the Palòn de la Mare glacier in the upper Valle dei Forni, in the municipality of Valfurva (SO). The analysis examined the dynamics of the mixed ice/snow phenomenon in order to understand its potential effects on Rifugio Branca, as the probability of such an event is not so remote, but had already occurred in February 1986. The study therefore examined the effectiveness of the diversion works built upstream in relation to an extreme event such as that of February 1986.
