Our team always strives to develop new solutions for all users and passionate individuals who are involved in the world of snow. Each Alpsolut team member is an expert in his or her individual field: we love snow-related challenges (some call them ‘problems’) and have tackled most of them!

We have wide-ranging knowledge from all around the world and the associated practical skills. We have stuck our heads in deep snow in almost every cold region on this planet: from Antarctica to the high latitude regions of Svalbard and everything in between!

I am a passionate mountain and snow lover. I studied environmental sciences at Insubria University in Como, wrote my thesis and did my internship at the ARPAV Avalanche Centre in Arabba (Bl), my PhD at the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Studies SLF in Davos, and I was a researcher for Insubria and CNR-IFAC in Florence, an experience that allowed me to participate in two Antarctic campaigns. When I returned to Italy, I moved to Livigno (SO) and founded Alpsolut. 

I like to use theory knowledge to solve concrete issues related to the world of snow and, more generally, to the environment.

Dott. Walter Steinkogler

Davos

I studied Meteorology and Geophysics at the University of Innsbruck (Austria) and worked at the SLF in Davos (Switzerland) for several years in snow and avalanche research. In addition, I completed my PhD at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (Switzerland).

The general management of Wyssen Canada & USA, the international coordination of the Wyssen Group and my involvement in Alpsolut allow me to work in this particular area between research and operational project management.

Prof. Michael Lehning

Meteorologist and geophysicist I expert in snowpack and atmosphere simulation

Davos - Lausanne

I am an associate professor of Cryosphere Sciences (EPFL) and of Snow Processes (WSL/SLF). My main competences are snow and atmosphere. Early on, I was the main developer of the SNOWPACK snow cover model and the driving force in making SNOWPACK results operationally available to avalanche warning services around the world.

I like to work with snow in many ways, not only from a scientific point of view.

Prof. Andrea Pozzi

Environmental and snow chemist

Como

I am an associate professor in analytical chemistry, specialising in environmental monitoring and analytical solid matter chemistry. My main areas of expertise are the hydro-geological system, atmospheric and water pollution.

In Alps olut I promote environmental researchactivities and design methods that respect the mountain region in order to organize university teaching courses, thus creating a link between research activity and the working environment.

I became passionate about snow and off-piste skiing during high school, I discovered Alpsolut during my previous work experience and, for a few years, I combined my winter activity as an avalanche forecaster with that of engineer at the technical department of the company Geobrugg Italy. In 2018, my passion for snow took over and I have since then been working, happily and 100%, for Alpsolut.

I focus on avalanche forecasting and avalanche risk management in monitoring and engineering.

I graduated in Science and technology for the environment and the territory at the UNIMONT campus of the University of Milan – Bicocca I wrote my thesis and carried out an internship at Alpsolut working on analysing the definition of avalanche risk and the factors behind typical avalanche problems. I came across Alpsolut during my training and decided to stay because it allows a constant upgrade of knowledge in practical and theoretical areas.

The study of snow and avalanche forecasting combines my two passions for meteorology and skiing.

Dott. Riccardo Cantoni

Software Engineer

I studied Computer Science & Engineering at Politecnico di Milano and KTH Stockholm and worked as a researcher in the field of discrete optimisation and operations research at Politecnico di Milano, where I also lectured for the courses Optimization and Foundation Of Operational Research. I have collaborated with several start-ups in Milan on both research and development of optimisation algorithms and the realisation of backend systems

I was born and raised in Livigno and in close contact with snow. I have been cross-country skiing since childhood, in the past as a competitor, currently as an enthusiast.

The collaboration with Alpsolut allows me to combine two of my great passions, snow and computing.

Bruno Mottini

Mountain Guide UIAGM I Heli-rescue Technician I Regional Alpine Rescue Instructor

Livigno

Mountain Guide UIAGM and regional Alpine Rescue Instructor I started skiing when I was two and a half years old. I grew up in Livigno and had the opportunity to approach winter sports from an early age. Initially, my passion was alpine skiing, then I switched to cross-country skiing and finally to the ski mountaineering.

I travelled around the Alps, Iran and Georgia in search of new and steeper lines. In 2011 I made my first expedition to Pakistan and attempted an unclimbed first ascent of Latok1. In the following years I was in Patagonia, managing to climb Cerro Torre and Fitz Roi. In recent years, paragliding has caught my attention, opening me up to a whole new way of going to the mountains.

I collaborate with Alpsolut to test innovative solutions in the alpine environment thanks to my competence.

Graduate in Civil Engineering for Risk Mitigation

Livigno - Castione Andevenno

A graduated in civil engineering for risk mitigation at Milan Polytechnic, I am an all-round mountain enthusiast and a member of Alpine Rescue. I have spent the last few years studying natural hazards, snow and avalanches in the Alpine and Arctic environment. During winter and spring of 2022, I lived in Sisimiut (Greenland), participating in a project to develop a local avalanche bulletin, and then wrote a scientific article on the results. My master’s thesis was instead dedicated to the study of the effects of climate change on the future snowfall regime in the Lombardy Alps.

In my long activity I first worked as an Alpine Guide and then, at Arpa Lombardia, I dedicated myself to the work of Avalanche Forecaster; for a period I coordinated the forecasters of Aineva – Monitoraggio e Prevenzione Neve e Valanghe and now I collaborate with Alpsolut for what concerns the local management of the Avalanche Risk for the Alta Valtellina area.
